definition: French Blackout Lining method

As in many industries we Drapery Makers throw around terms that most others don’t understand. So I’d like to try to define some of those for you as best I can.

Today, I’d like to help you understand what is meant by the term

French Blackout Lining Method – basically, it means a way line either panels or a top treatment to achieve light blocking. I avoided the use of the term “blackout” here – because no window treatment can achieve totally darkness, but with many methods we can come close.

This method of blackout achieves the effect of Blackout lining (a lining that is created by fusing a “rubberized” backing on to lining) without the stiffness and limitations of that product.

It is achieved by using 4 layers of fabric to create this effect: First is your Face or Decorator fabric, Second, a layer of Drapery Interlining (a flannel type product), next is a layer of Black Lining, followed by a layer of standard Drapery lining. By using these layers you create a nearly blackout effect. The key to this process is a tightly woven Black Lining. You can tell this by holding a flashlight behind the lining – the less light you see coming through the better.

I prefer this method to lining panels because they hang better and look very plush and rich. It’s also a great insulation factor for both heat and cold. It also creates much weight in you treatment so make sure that it is secured properly when installing.

The drawback to this method is that is much more labor intensive thus costing more upfront but I believe that the benefits of protecting your drapery fabric and insulation out weight the cost in the long run.

Springing into Panels!!!

Yes, It’s coming up Panels all over my studio! All my upcoming projects are Panels – with a few pillows thrown in! Panels can be simple or elaborate, they add a splash of design and color to any room! And there are more pleat styles than I can name – but by far the three most popular (in my area at least)

Pinch Pleat

Euro (or Fan) Pleat

Goblet Pleat

Here are some the newest project fabrics that have come in here at the studio!

This fabric was used to make these reverse tuck panels (a great option to Flat panels – the small tucks give a bit of fullness even when fully closed!)

This is the project I am starting today: A pair of stationary Goblet pleated panels w/Functioning Pinch Pleated sheers underneath!

Week of the 17th – I will be working on these fun panels on the left w/Grommet Tops and Lead Edge Beaded Trim! On the Right is a Window Seat Cushion for the same room (Body is Pink & Cording is the print). Also that week I have another set of panels for the Master Bedroom in same home – fabric is on back order. And the following week it’s 2 more teen bedrooms for same family (no fabrics in studio yet!)

It always amazes me how thing seem to come in groups in the Studio. I remember a couple of months ago I had 5 pairs of panels in the shop at the same time, all different clients – then it seems like I always get a rush of red and green combos as the holidays approach, and sometimes all the jobs have brown as the dominate color….

Well, lately it’s been – Chairs! Thought I share some of the fun things I’ve been doing with them in the studio.

Really cute way to dress up some dining chairs by doing the backs and seats as separate pieces it makes for a more relaxed look!

Can you believe – 8yrs of Cord & Pleat Design?

April 1st was the 8yr anniversary for Cord & Pleat Design, Inc.! It’s been an amazing journey for me and I’m still lovin it!! I remind myself how blessed I am to work in an industry that I love and that is constantly changing and also to have such amazing clients and colleagues!

And as spring is finally coming on us here in Oklahoma – changes are happening here at the Studio too… I recently opened an internet shop – on Etsy to sell some small items that I make from scraps left over from projects and super great buys I find on my fabric hunting sprees!

A Perfect fit….

Have you ever looked at a beautifully dressed window and thought something was off? just not right about it?

Well, more than likely it was the proportions & fit of the treatment that were causing this effect. Proportion and fit is as important in your window treatments as it is in your clothes. think of your window treatments as “clothes” for your home.

Let me show your an example to help you see the difference in poor proportion and proper proportion. Take a look the following sketches and then I’ll discuss which treatment is in proportion with the window.

These window are all the same size but as you can see the valances are are different lengths.

If your proportions are to small your treatment can come across as skimpy and may look as thought you didn’t have enough fabric or as an after thought!

If your proportions are to large your window can look heavy and over done. While “lavish” is wonderful in Interior Design – making the proportions larger will not achieve that effect. Instead focus on rich looking fabrics and plush trim.

You guessed it – This proportion is the winner! Both the side panels and the valanceare in proportion with the window!

How can you achieve the “perfect” proportion in your home? By using a professional Window Treatment designer and/or interior designer can assist you with finding the “perfect fit” for your windows!

"Off" the Walls

As a window treatment professional many times I am called on to come up with creative or unusual ways of installing treatments.

In this application I was asked to install treatments on 100 year old plaster walls. Trust me that put “fear” in my heart – if you don’t know a “small” hole in plaster walls can become a “large” issue both time and money wise!

Instead of mounting the valances to the wall, we were able to attach them by toe nailing screws through the moldings above the windows into the mount boards of the valances.

In this case it definitely paid off for both the client and myself – that part of my job as professional Window Treatment Designer/Fabricator is to think outside of the box – or in this case “off” the wall!!

Pushing to the “Extreme”

It’s quiet and peaceful as I sit in my studio and write this post – the total opposite of how it was a week ago. The “rollercoaster” of ABC’s Extreme Home MakeOver rolled into Tulsa Jan 28th along with an ice/snow storm.

In conjunction w/Simmons Homes Extreme began a project for a deserving family right here in Tulsa. As soon as I heard about the project, I jumped on board – excited for once to have the time in my schedule to give back to a community I love.

If I had to describe my experience in one word it would be = ROLLERCOASTER

Here’s a timeline of my experience.

Jan 15th: I saw a post on Twitter to volunteer, filled out form = Excited!

Jan 19th: Attended “Pep Rally” for the event with several friends, none of us knowing if we were going to be selected. = Hopeful!

Jan 22nd: Notified that I indeed was chosen as one of the volunteers for the project (out of over 1500) = Thrilled!

Jan 25th: Emailed reminder of my fabrication skills = Anxious!

Jan 26th: Received call from the “design liaison” stating that I would indeed be working on fabricating for the home and would I be willing to be one of two head seamstresses on this project. = Ecstatic!

Jan 28th: Build started! Ice and Snow Storm arrived too! = Nervous!

Jan 29th: Received call of seamstress meeting on Sun at 2pm; Still snowing! = Comforted!

Jan 31st: Meeting. Project overview was given to us by the design liaison and one of the designers/architect – Cory. None of the show’s “stars” were present. As a “head” seamstress I assigned projects as best I could with what knowledge I had available as to skill levels. fabrics would be available at 10:30am on Monday.

I went directly from the meeting to the workroom to clean and prep for the “volunteers” I had coming to assist in the project on the next day. One of my wonderful volunteers, Anoli,also went with me to assist in cleaning. = Anticipating!

Feb 1st : After an excited and sleepless nite, early to the workroom to continue prepping for the next two days. I finished cleaning and organizing and worked up work orders so I could keep track of the projects that were being worked on in my studio. Fabrics finally were ready and picked up around noon.

Volunteers we re arriving at my studio when I arrived back from picking up fabrics, we all knew this would be a long two days. My dear friend, ShaRhonda, brought taco soup, chips, and drinks for myself and volunteers – great to have food in a crock pot that was ready when ever someone was hungry.

We worked hard through the first day and nite – cutting, serging (and of course my serger decided not to play nice ) and began to assemble projects. Our projects consisted of window treatments, panels and bedding for Master bedroom and pillows for the Master and one of the childrens rooms. My wonderful husband, came and did the woodwork needed for the window treatments. The volunteers were great, wonderful talented ladies, Anoli, Karen, Jodi, Patti – first day volunteers. We worked late into the night and two of us even bunked down for a couple of hours in my studio. = Overwhelmed!

Feb 2nd: 2 volunteers and myself, Anoli, and Karen to start, later we added Marilyn and Patti. The design liaison called and added pillows for another room to our list as well. Unfortunately, I began to get very sick and this began to hinder progress, I called in a favor from another workroom pro, Judy to come and assist, by then things were looking rather dim as to the completion by deadline, so I called the other head seamstress for assistance and she made the decision to take the work to other teams for completion. = Exhausted, Frustrated, Sick

For several days I was extremely disappointed and frustrated for myself and my amazing volunteers to not be able to complete the projects – but after some time and reflection I believe that we did the best job possible in the time allotted and the circumstances we faced.

In spite, of the “rollercoaster” I am honored to have assisted in the projects and process and I met some wonderful ladies in my community with whom I plan to keep in contact.

Photo Feature: Shaped Box Pleated Valances

I thought I’d start the new year by starting a new feature – I’ll share photos of a project and discuss any special issues, concerns or issues that were considered in creating just the “right” look for the project. Okay, so much for talk …let’s get to it!

On this bay window the decorator asked me to create 3 shaped box pleated valances w/bias banding, micro cording and decorative trim. 2 small and 1 large.

My task was to take the “theme” fabric and make sure that the showed well on both the flat scalloped sections and the pleated sections of the valances. I wanted the scene to fill out the section but not look too crowed. Due to the size difference on the scalloped sections it was necessary to chose 2 different sections of the fabric to “showcase”. Both the end sections (small) feature the same scene and both sections on the center (large) valance are a different scene. I tied it all together by featuring the same scene on the pleats. This created a cohesive treatment and allowed more of the fabric to show.

Autumn Colors are Falling!!!

I can always tell when the season changes, the colors in my studio seem to change too. You’d be surprised how many times the colors of the fabric and trims on my workroom table reflect the seasons!

Check out some of the new project fabrics and trims that have come into the studio this week.

These two fabrics will be shaped box pleated valances and cafe curtains.

I wanted to take a moment and post a few photos of recent completed projects!

2 story panels mounted on medallions with puddled hem in a great room!

This project was a master bedroom, dressing area and bath. We used a gently arched valance with box pleated skirt and trim. In the master bedroom we added stationary panels over the existing silhouette shades.

I am truly blessed to wonderful clients and a full calendar of jobs! Trying hard to balance all the things one must due as a small business person these days - sorry my blog updates seem to go to the back burner when I'm swamped....working to do better at that.

Wanted to share with you a few pictures of some boxed cushions which have been completed and are currently in their new homes - both were for young "pre-teen" girl rooms! I think they are both so fun and will grow with the young ladies!

Here's what's on my worktable for the next few weeks - I have about 5 jobs that have gotten backlogged either from fabric or trim being backorder or other decisions that needed to be completed before the beginning of the fabrication process - so I'm working hard to meet the deadlines and produce the top quality that my business is known for!!

Sent out panels and pillows yesterday PM on a job - beautiful patterned silk with lead edge flat braid inset & 2 14x20 lumbar pillows w/self-cording!!! Here are a few pics in my studio.

Starting yesterday I'm working on 3 arched boxed pleated valances, 1 staight box pleated valance and pinch pleated panels for a job going out Friday! We had to wait on trim for 2 of the valances - finially came in a few weeks ago!

Also starting this week I have a job with 4 pair of multiple width panels and an arched cornice with swag and cascade overlay...here are the fabrics on this job - still waiting on trim for cornice.

Projects in the Studio...

Here's a quick update on projects in progress at the studio....

I don't know about you, but I love seeing before and after shots. That's why I try to photograph the fabrics and trims before I begin the projects and then again after - even if I never see the treatments in their "new home" atleast I have a bit of memory of them. I guess it's kinda like having the baby pics from the hospital!

Okay, here's a few projects currently in the studio.

I showed this photo earlier for this project but wanted to share it side by side with the finished pics..

Here's a few new photos of projects that I've started and will be started....

This fabric and trim will be 2 arched box pleated valances - hope to have them done before the weekend!

More box pleated valances and panels. There is a trim for the bottom of these valances - have not received it yet!

More pretty fabric - this job will be panels and

pillows to start next week. Again there will be lead edge trim on the panels - not pictured.

Again Gold/Beige linen - same as the 2 story panels from weeks ago - now will be motorized roman shades....

That's about it for now.... will post completed photos in a few weeks!!!

I am working to get my posts on a regular schedule - some how life seems to change my schedule more often than I'd like. But definitely a goal to work toward!!!

Why choose CustomTreatments?

Why choose custom window treatments and bedding? Why are they so much better than Ready-Made? These are questions window treatment professionals hear on a daily basis - and probably even more often now with everyone tightening their belts and and budgets!

So let's discuss why Custom....

In a previous post I shared with you some of the standards in the construction of custom window treatments, so I'll do my best not to repeat myself here.

Point One: Custom Treatments are Unique!

Celebrities and prom-goers agree...no one likes showing up in the same dress as someone else, so why should your window and bed treatments be the same as your neighbors or co-workers?

Custom window treatments are made to the exact specifications of your project. This means that not only are the measurements (width, length and fullness) made to suit and be proportional to the room and setting, but that they are made with your choice of fabric, trim and details. They are in fact unique! Just like you and your home or business.

Point Two: Custom Treatments actually save $$

Yes, the upfront investment in custom treatments is greater than that of Ready-Made, however, over time, like any major household purchase, they actually end up costing less. In my experience, this happens in at least a couple of different ways.

First, typically custom made treatments are made of better quality fabrics, linings and construction, thus extending their life span. Just like a human - fabrics are effected by our environment - sun, humidity, as well as daily wear and tear - take their toll. So it stands to reason that using quality goods and linings and taking proper care of them will enhance the length of usability. Since, custom tends to last longer - there is less waste (and that's good for the enviorment).

Secondly, Energy usage can be effected by proper use of custom treatments. If you have a window that gets lots of sun or cold - using a functioning treatment to help reduce the amount of sun during peak times of the day - can reduce energy costs - also - it can reduce wear on other interior items such as carpets and furniture (again - saving $$$ by replacing things less).

Third Point:(and my favorite!) Supporting Local Economy!

By using a local workroom and/or design professional you are supporting and helping to sustain your local economy! With the headlines everywhere talking about job losses and layoffs - isn't it nice to know that you can help others, even a little by buying local and supporting the local workers and artisans. I am a huge supporter of small business and believe that even one person can make a difference if we work together to support our local independent businesses - remember the "mom & pop" stores - so that money stays in our local economies and helps everyone!

I truly believe and am passionate that everyone deserves to have a home and/or office environment that they enjoy being in. Our homes are our sanctuaries, no matter how humble or grand, and they should be filled with the people and things that bring us joy and beauty!

So I challenge you to look around your home and find one thing you would would like to improve and then research and find a local craftsman or artisan to assist you in making that change!

Definitions: Roman Shades

Welcome to the 2nd installment of the Definitions Segment today we are going to define and discuss Roman Shades and some of the many different styles available.

Definition: SHADE = An Operational device used to reduce or screen light or heat.

Definition: ROMAN SHADE = A treatment of flat fabric that can be raised or lowered by a cord. Variation include horizontal pleats sewn to the back, decorative pleats sewn to the front and permanent soft folds.

Let's discuss a few variations of the Roman shade.

Flat Roman: hangs flat when in down position

Relaxed or Soft Roman: has permanent fold in the bottom of the shade that form a "smile" when up or down.

Hobbled, Soft Fold or Waterfall: A shade that has permanent soft folds whether up or down.

Tucked : has tucks that are sewn into the shade - the tucks can be to the front or the back of the shade.

Slatted: this version has tucks that are sewn in the shade (either to the front or the back) and have a thin board inserted. Can create a very modern zen like look.

Two other versions worth mentioning here are the Butterfly and dog-eared roman

There are many other versions of this versatile window treatment. As with any custom window treatment many times the only limitation is your imagination and the fabric you choose to use.

I would be very remiss to end the the topic of roman shades before mentioning the need for safety. Because these treatments require the use of cords to operate, it is very important that these cords be secured (especially in homes with children) - please use a the Cord/Bead chain Retainer for continuous loop chains.

and cord lock w/a cord condenser (this will allow multiple cords to feed in the condenser and only one to come out to operate the shade).

This small effort will help prevent many accidents and make your home safer.

Busy and creative week here at the studio.

I have several projects on the work tables...

I have a duvet cover, pillows and pleated valance

Next there's a gathered balloon shade w/knife pleated ruffle detail along bottom edge.

A boxed cushion- for a young ladies room

as well as panels and sheers and scalloped cafe sheers.

I'll post photos as soon as projects are complete. Also, I still hope to get photos from the decorator of the 2 story panels from last week.

On the business end, I'll also be working on organizing my office and hopefully getting together with a pr person to discuss the melding of all my different methods of media into one cohesive brand!!

Segment: Definition of Custom Window Treatments

Welcome to my new weekly segment called Definitions! Since like so many industries, Custom Window & Bed Treatment Professionals use lots of terms that make little sense to many "non" industry people. I thought that this segment might help some of my followers to understand my business a bit better and also to become better educated consumers.

So without delay let's jump into our first segment: Definition of Custom Window Treatments.

What are custom window treatments? Custom Window Treatments are defined as any window treatments/coverings that are made with specified measurements and specifically for the customer.

This includes Hard Window treatments (such as blinds and shutters) and Soft Window treatments (such as draperies & valances). I'm going to focus my discussion on Soft Window Treatments since this is what I primarily deal in.

Are there standards for professional custom treatments? Yes there are! Professional window treatments are created by a "workroom" or "fabrication studio". Here are just a few of the standards.

All seams should be serged and finished with an overlock stitch.
Patterns should be matched exactly at seams.
Avoid topstitching unless it is an integral part of your design.
Coordinate the color of the thread w/the fabric.
Hems should be blind stitched or hand hemmed.
Bottoms hems should be at least 4" to 6" and doubled.
Side hems should be 1" to 3" wide and double turned.
Trim should attached only to the face fabric - never through the lining.
Treatments should always be lined unless sheer or a semi-sheer look is desired.

There are numerous styles of custom window treatments and If you don't find one you like your designer/decorator or window treatment designer can assist you in creating a look that is uniquely you. I be sharing some of the different styles and types of treatments with you in the future...

Too Long Silent....

Can't believe it's been almost a full month since my last full blog post. I've been working lots and trying to come up with a sensational blog topic....thus I haven't written at all. Maybe I should settle for something ....more often than nothing at all?

Things here at the studio are humming - I'm busy with lots of panels, valances, duvet covers, roman shades, sheers and more on the way....This week I'm working on 2 story linen panels that will be mounted on medallions and roman shades that will be operated by remote controls. Fun and unique job. I hope to post pics once they are installed. Here's a post of the fabric for both - client has opted for a neutral pallet so they can change out the accessories.

This image is from the Spring 2009 Couture Runway collection of Valentino. I absolutely love the detailing.

In fact, several of the designer on the spring 2009 - couture runway were featuring lots of intricate details. They are truely inspiring to me. I can't wait to have a bit of free time and to put my hand to some fabric folding and weaving...and coming up with some great unique details for window and bed treatments!

Balancing on the Beam

As a young girl my favorite gymnastic event was the Balance Beam. I loved how it could be so graceful and yet so perilous at the same time.

We all need to find balance in our lives. I know many of us struggle with it daily. I'm one of those people. I'm learning that when we neglect one area of our lives the others suffer from the neglect also...we slip off that small beam we balance on.

Daily I struggle to keep the paperwork and accounting part of my job in balance with the appointments and client time, which I struggle to keep in balance with the creative & fabrication time. All are equally important, but obviously like everyone I have my strengths and my weaknesses, learning that more and more each day.

One thing I've put into action is to do a bit of paperwork and accounting each morning so that it is more manageable and since it's not my favorite part of the job, I don't neglect it. I'm also learning to reach out to family and friends who can assist me, so that I'm not in this alone.

I'm sure that this will continue to be my event...learning to balance and even be graceful in my business - as my own version of "Wonder Woman" - on the balance beam of my life.

So sorry I've neglected my blog the past few weeks....I'm gearing up for my 1st ever open house/7th anniversary celebration. In the midst of that I'm truely bless to be extremely busy and I'm trying to keep up with my work load.

Mirror, Mirror on the wall....

"Mirror, Mirror on the wall, who's the fairest of all?" Most of us know this as a line from Snow White. But as I start this week I wonder if any of us really ask that question when we look in our Mirrors?

We look - check our hair, our makeup - even look between our teeth for food but do we REALLY see? I'm not talking about asking if we are "beautiful" on the outside - but really using the mirror to look within ourselves and see both the beauty and the flaws that exists in each one of us.

Well, I for one am trying to be brave enough to view myself as I am beauty & flaws! It's not always fun - but I trust that I will grow from the experience and truly become a better person from it with His help.

I want to learn to do the small acts of kindness that many of our parents taught were just common courtesy. To allow others to check out before us in the grocery line - especially when our cart if chocked full and they only have one or two things or maybe they have a child that is being hard to handle or just because we had that little nudge in our spirit! To slow down and take time while we drive or walk and not "plow" others out of our way....even when they are driving us "crazy". To show a bit of kindness to a complete stranger look them in the eye and smile...something so simple and yet we in our "hurry" forget to do it. There are thousands of other ways we can do simple small things - and none of it costs us a penny...just a bit of kindness and courtesy. Both of which are returned twice over when we give them out.

I'm definitely a selfish human and no where near where I want to be...but I'm willing to keep trying...are you???

It's 2:45am this morning..........

and I'm awakened by my own thoughts....random as they maybe

Stress (yup, that's my middle name!) about my upcoming open house and all that needs to be done. - but you've heard enough about that.

Wondering how in the world I'm going to get all the jobs that have been on hold done by the end of the week.

Wishing my bank account had more zeros. Don't we all?

Thinking....thinking....thinking....

Where's the off switch on my brain and who turned it on so early? And why won't they let me get back to sleep? Even a purring cat one side and my sleeping hubby at the other don't do the trick.

I'm trapped in a place of limbo where my thoughts and worries control me - finally after hours of tug of war, I open my hands and release control and feel the tension quietly drain from my body and settle in for a few minutes of sleep before the alarm blares!!!

How simple it is when we realize there is one who wishes to share our loads and our burdens....why then does it take me so long to realize this???

The tossing of the waves...

I feel the tossing of the waves around my boat (life)and I'm a bit blank facing another day, tired and in need of caffeine!

Here's hoping I can get everything done that needs to be done today. I'm beginning to feel the pressure of my upcoming open house and everything that needs to be done for that event. I think I have a list as long as my arm and I seem to add to it everyday.

I'm currently bidding on several jobs and have several appointments with retail clients, so I'm grateful & blessed to be busy. Have they perfected cloning yet? I could really use that at the moment.

I'm also in the process of revising my wholesale contract & terms. My recent experience, don't ask, has caused me to make sure I have this in place with all my decorators/designers. I guess I had become a bit lax in that area.

I thought I start sharing some of my favorite treatments that I've created over the past 7yrs.

These panels cover an eyebrow arched alcove and go back about 18" to the door creating almost a tent like effect. There is 12" of smocking at the top and are held back by faux italian strining. Designer: Jeannie Carpenter; Workroom: Cord & Pleat Design.

High Ho, High Ho it's off to work I go. When I hear that like most others I see the dwarfs in "Snow White" shouldering their tools and marching down the road to work - all the while "whistling" as they go...

Isn't that how we should be? Shouldn't we do something in our lives that we are truly happy to do. For the lack of a better word...Passionate! I am one of those who is truly blessed to have found the work that I am truly passionate about. I know that seem strange when you think of what I do - I plan, design, cut and sew a quote/unquote Luxury product. In these times people are cutting back on "luxuries" - well, so far I haven't seen the effects of this in any major way - so either I have my head stuck in the sand or I'm doing something right (I must have someone looking out for me!!).

I believe that everyone deserves to have a home/office environment that they enjoy - that makes them feel good. It is said that when we like our surroundings we are happier more productive people. Well, with all the "doom & gloom" and "rage" issues out there I hope I can bring a bit of light and sunshine in to the lives of those that I am able to touch and in the mean time I get the added blessing of it bring me joy too.

So maybe as you pass those things we all take for granted or wish we had - you'll remember to look around for those things that bring light into your life today! And take a little time to add a bit of light and joy to your life and that of your family and friends by creating "environments" that bring happiness - even in the smallest ways. The use of a favorite color, a fabric pattern that makes one happy, a bit of whimsy....just use that great creative mind you were given and I know you'll come up with something..and if you get stuck and need help - well you know who to call - that "crazy" "loopy" drapery lady!!!

Road Tripping it today!!!

I love road trips I discovered the joy of them in college and then when I was serving in missions - just traveling in the car - mostly by myself enjoying my tunes and the scenery! No matter the time of year. I find it enjoyable and almost like recharging my batteries.

I'm hoping and praying that today will be that way. I'm on my way to southern Kansas to make adjustments for a Decorator on a job. Not looking forward to it, so please keep me in your prayers. I'm not sure I'm going to be able to make this Decorator "happy" but I will try as I always do to make things right in her eyes.

Afterwards, I hope to get to take a quick side trip to visit a colleague in Joplin - it just depends on how the time goes with the adjustments. I know that will be the fun part of the journey.

Hopefully, I'll be able to post after I return today - some pics and a more positive message. Prayers and "happy thoughts" are definitely in need for me today.

The pounding in my head...

Okay, today's not such a great day so far. I woke up feeling icky in my stomach and now my head is pounding with a migraine to beat any "headbanging" band. Hopefully better soon.

Getting a very late start to the day. I've been out since early running errands all over town. Picked up foam and staples at the upholstery supply store, picked up migraine medicine at the drug store, made personal deposits for hubby and self and one for the business too - woot woo!!!! Pick Up fabric from our local/national fabric company - finally got breakfast and CAFFEINE at about 9:45am....Still need to unload the car. I have to pick up my stepdaughter after class and take her to get her car in just a few minutes - then it's back to unload. 1pm - meeting for hubby and I...

Then after wards back to the fabric company to pick up lining & maybe by around 3pm I'll actually be able to do some work....And I wonder why I get behind in my schedule...I'll post photos of new fabric and job in house later.

Lists, Lists, and More Lists

I admit it I'm horrible at making lists...and then when I get them made, I forget where I put them much less use them. But I am definitely addicted to the feeling you get when you get things crossed off them.

Panic set in last evening when I realized I had 30 days til my 7th anniversary/open house!!! So much to do, so little time....the ageless story. So I'm currently working on a list to take me up to exciting date!! Also, I need to make a list to keep myself on track this week of jobs that need done - broken down into bite sized pieces. So far this week I've found that I'm a bit scattered and easily distracted (that's a new on for me right?)

So for all those who love lists and those who like me keep mental lists - here I go I'm plunging into the list arena for this month...I'm actually going to get those lists out of my head and written down.

Now, the big decision (as I sit and drink my AM Caffeine) is do I make a list the old fashion way - with pen and paper or use my computer - since it seems to be one of my major distractions at the moment. And even more scary do I dare post this list here on my "blog" (still getting use to that term) - so that you, my friends and "cyber" friends can help hold me accountable...

Well, I'm off to ponder that and all the hard questions for the day...check back for my decision - or voice your opinion.

Monday AM & Caffeine!!

Okay it's hard getting started today. I need a large dose of caffeine & a handful of Excedrin to ward off my impending migraine. I feel a bit overwhelmed with all that's in front of me this week.

Way to many jobs - not enough time...and a very hard to please designer. So prayers are definitely in order...

But there's lots of fun stuff too, some really cute monogramed pillow shams, throw pillows and bench cushion for a young girls room!! Pictured here.

And another job - still don't have fabrics...should have them today for a double box pleated valance and panels...

Oh...and don't forget a single lumbar pillow w/velour looped fringe...love it....

So much for a lazy Sunday...

I spent the day at my showroom/studio cleaning and working on some french black out panels that are now ready for the designer to tell me the finished length which she promised me last week. Oh, well.

I also realized how much I still have to get done before my anniversary/open house on April 2nd. So much to do and so little time, I will probably enlist the assistance of my friends and family to help me get everything done and still stay caught up on all the jobs in the studio. I feel truly blessed to be staying so busy during these uncertain times.

On the lighter side...Why is it just when you think you've got a job figured out - it seems to change overnite? When I cut the widths for this next set of panels - I thought I would get a full 2 widths of fabric...now after studying the widths I realized to match the pattern properly, I would have to match almost halfway into the 2nd panel. Oh well, no harm no foul (as my husband says) - I looked at the notes from the designer again and I can cover the window with only a width a half each panel - but now we will have excess rings....hope the client can return them.

I think I will always be learning in this business - if I stop maybe learning - I should just retire????

I'm still working on getting this blog connected in all the places I would like it to be connected. Hopefully, I'll have a sideshow up and running by next week. For some reason it will take that long for it to show up on the internet with the "flickr" program I chose to host it... Oh well, I'm just hoping those interested in my musing and conundrums will find this blog at least entertaining. I work alone so much that sometimes my best amusement is to laugh at myself and the things that test my endurance. The panels didn't get completed today, however, I am hopeful that I will accomplish this tomorrow afternoon. The adjustments on the cornices is about 98% complete - just have to hand sew the trim that had to be added due to the increase in width that was needed for them to fit.

I'm hoping I can get this posted to my Facebook - some how connected....still learning the ins and outs of this stuff. I think I'm just smart enough to be dangerous...But for now this is all. I need to get to work finishing up some cornices. These are being adjusted due to incorrect measurements from a designer and then It's on to 2 sets of panels that should have been done last week. Hopefully by Monday I'll be back on track and schedule.
